Oprah's book club selection welcomed by out of print book sellers

By Anonymous

When Oprah Winfrey announced that East of Eden by John Steinbeck was the first title for her new book club, out of print book sellers were ecstatic.

Within hours readers began calling stores for copies. Some even wanted first editions for their collections. Other titles by John Steinbeck began moving off the shelves.

A number of new on-line book sites anticipate new customers. Michael Tokman, President of ChooseBooks.com noted that there are seventy-six copies on that site. Prices range from $1.76 for a paperback copy to over $300 for a first edition in dust jacket. "Oprah's choice of classic titles will be good for all the Independent book sellers who list with us. When book buyers realize that Choosebooks.com offers extra services at no extra cost, they will return to our site."

When asked about the extra services, Tokman mentioned a frequent buyer club for those who register, free book marks from the Resource page and Choosebooks.com's new search engine. "Some readers do not want books with underlining. On our site you can exclude books with underlining or other defects from your search results. No need to wade through lists of books that you would not buy. You save time and book buying is more fun"

Oprah's first title was just announced and already book sellers are anticipating the next one. They are convinced that her choice of older books will revive readers' interest in classic fiction. Those listing inventory on www.Choosebooks.com and other web sites believe the T.V. star will boost sales in the out of print market in 2003.

Publisher Figures Out A Way To Enlighten The Lives Of Single Mothers Through Creation of Book Club.

By Anonymous

Brooklyn, NY –– Feona Sharhran Huff, an avid reader and the founder of Single Momz Magazine (www.singlemomzmag.web.com) has created yet another vehicle aid in educating, empowering, and entertaining single mothers worldwide. In the July/August issue of Single Momz Magazine, Feona launches Reaching Mines Book Club.

“Being a first-time mommy, it’s even more critical that I read literature that will
strengthen my parenting skills as well as educate me on those subjects I need to know. After all, knowledge is power when applied effectively,” says Feona, who reads at least two books a month. “I know a lot of single mothers who share in my concern, so what better way to share our thoughts, exchange ideas, and grow, then to develop a book club?”

Reaching Mines will select one book per Single Momz Magazine issue to read. Discussions will be made possible via e-mail exchange. Comments will be posted in the following issue of the magazine. There is no cost for membership -- only a promise to learn and share your mind with others!

The selected book for the July/August of Single Momz Magazine is “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill ($12.95, Random House).

“I chose this title after meeting a wonderful and bright single mother who was very much into personal finance issues concerning single mothers and women in general,” says Feona. “Michelle walked me to Barnes and Noble bookstore, led me to the prosperity and wealth section, removed the book from the shelf and said, ‘This book will change your life if you want it to. You will think and grow rich.’”

Feona adds: “After reading the first few pages, I knew it would that I had to apply Hill’s
methods to my life and to share his teachings with other single mothers because I want them to reap the benefits of financial wealth and happiness as well.”

Reaching Mines is not to be mistaken as book club that exclusively focuses on
parenting-related books. According to the founder, this would quickly become stale and
boring. Instead, the book club will introduce a variety of areas, including personal finance and investing, biographies, self-hep and motivational speaking, and entrepreneurship.

“Members of Reaching Mines will get more out of the book club than they could imagine,” says Feona. “We are more than a book club, we are a support system for life!”

Feona holds a B.A. in Journalism from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA. Not only does she juggle single motherhood, a full-time job (where she works as the assistant editor of College Bound and SUCCEED magazines), and of course, Single Momz Magazine, but she's also the Lifestyles Editor for Black Reign News, and a freelance writer for Black Enterprise, Black Enterprise For Teens, UPSCALE, The Source, Word Up!, Rap Masters, Today’s Child, and SheInk. She’s a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, New York Association of Black Journalists, Moms On A Mission, A Circle Of Sisters, and The New York Metro Alumni Chapter of Norfolk State University. Feona is the CEO of FSH Enterprises.
